Tune Miss Forbes's Farewell to BanffA
-
-
I-
-
'Twas even the dewy fields were greenB
On every blade the pearls hangC
The zephyr wanton'd round the beanB
And bore its fragrant sweets alangC
In ev'ry glen the mavis sangC
All nature listening seem'd the whileD
Except where greenwood echoes rangC
Amang the braes o' BallochmyleD
-
II-
-
With careless step I onward stray'dE
My heart rejoic'd in nature's joyF
When musing in a lonely gladeE
A maiden fair I chanc'd to spy-
Her look was like the morning's eye-
Her air like nature's vernal smileD
Perfection whisper'd passing by-
Behold the lass o' BallochmyleD
-
III-
-
Fair is the morn in flow'ry MayG
And sweet is night in autumn mildH
When roving thro' the garden gayG
Or wand'ring in the lonely wildH
But woman nature's darling childH
There all her charms she does compileD
Even there her other works are foil'dI
By the bonnie lass o' BallochmyleD
-
IVA
-
O had she been a country maidE
And I the happy country swainJ
Tho' shelter'd in the lowest shedK
That ever rose on Scotland's plainJ
Thro' weary winter's wind and rainJ
With joy with rapture I would toilD
And nightly to my bosom strainJ
The bonnie lass of BallochmyleD
-
VA
-
Then pride might climb the slippery steepL
Where fame and honours lofty shineM
And thirst of gold might tempt the deepL
Or downward seek the Indian mineM
Give me the cot below the pineM
To tend the flocks or till the soilD
And ev'ry day have joys divineM
With the bonnie lass o' BallochmyleD
