I hae seen the hairst o' Rettie ladsA
And twa three aff the throneB
I've heard o sax and seven weeksC
The hairsters girn and groanB
But wi' a covie Willie RaeD
A monthie an' a dayD
Sends a' the jolly hairstersC
Singin' blithely doon the braeD
-
In a monthie an' a day my ladsC
The like was never seenE
It beats to sticks the fastest stripsC
O' Vickers' best machineE
The Speedwell she taks up the rearF
The Victory clears the wayD
And twenty acres daily yieldsC
Laid doon tae Willie RaeD
-
He drives them roond and roond the fieldG
At sic an awfu' rateH
Yet guides them gently oot and inI
At mony's a kittle gateH
And wiles them gently ow'r the steensC
And mony a hidden holeJ
And he'll come by nae mishanterD
If ye leave him wi' a poleJ
-
O he sharps their teeth tae gar them biteK
He taps them on the jawsC
And if he sees them dowie likeL
He'll brawly ken the causeC
A boltie here or a pinnie thereD
Tae keep them aye in tuneM
He'll quickly stop their wild careerD
And bring the clishack doonM
-
O he whittles aff the cornersC
And makes crookit bitties strauchtK
He likes to see that man and beastK
Are equal in a drauchtK
An' a' the corners neat an' squareD
And nae a shafe agleyJ
And he'll coont wi' ony dominieM
Frae the Deveron tae the SpeyD
-
Noo he's nae made up wi' mony wordsC
Or kent tae puff and leeJ
But just as keen a little chapN
As ony you will seeJ
And if you're in search o hairvest workO
Upon a market dayD
Take my advice be there in timeP
And look for Willie RaeD
-
Noo he hae got it in abootD
An' a wer things be tichtD
We'll gaither roond the festal boardD
Tae spend a joyfae nichtD
Wi' Scottish sangs and mutton brothQ
Tae charm our cares awayD
We'll drink success tae RettieD
And my bandster Annie MacleanM
-
Noo afore I end my hamely screedD
I canna weel forgetD
The gentle dames that guards the hooseC
And keeps the folk in maetD
Lang may they bile the kailJ
And stir the porridge weelJ
An may never need or want for nailJ
Tae keep the timmer haleJ
-
Noo here's tae a' ye Rettie bladesC
A ringin' cheer HurraD
A better lot o' workin' chapsC
A gaffer never sawC
They're aye sae willin' for tae pairtD
And eager for the frayD
It was them that made the boatie rowD
That was steer'd by Willie RaeD
