WHEN dear Clarinda matchless fairA
First struck Sylvander's raptur'd viewB
He gaz'd he listened to despairA
Alas 'twas all he dared to doB
-
-
Love from Clarinda's heavenly eyesC
Transfixed his bosom thro' and thro'A
But still in Friendships' guarded guiseC
For more the demon fear'd to doB
-
-
That heart already more than lostD
The imp beleaguer'd all perdueB
For frowning Honour kept his postE
To meet that frown he shrunk to doB
-
-
His pangs the Bard refused to ownF
Tho' half he wish'd Clarinda knewB
But Anguish wrung the unweeting groanF
Who blames what frantic Pain must doB
-
-
That heart where motley follies blendG
Was sternly still to Honour trueB
To prove Clarinda's fondest friendG
Was what a lover sure might doB
-
-
The Muse his ready quill employedH
No nearer bliss he could pursueB
That bliss Clarinda cold deny'dH
Send word by Charles how you doH
-
-
The chill behest disarm'd his museI
Till passion all impatient grewH
He wrote and hinted for excuseJ
'Twas 'cause he'd nothing else to doH
-
-
But by those hopes I have aboveK
And by those faults I dearly rueH
The deed the boldest mark of loveK
For thee that deed I dare uo doH
-
-
O could the Fates but name the priceL
Would bless me with your charms and youH
With frantic joy I'd pay it thriceL
If human art and power could doH
-
-
Then take Clarinda friendship's handH
Friendship at least I may avowM
And lay no more your chill commandH
I'll write whatever I've to do SYLVANDERH
