WITH secret throes I marked that earthA
That cottage witness of my birthA
And near I saw bold issuing forthB
In youthful prideC
A Lindsay race of noble worthA
Famed far and wideC
-
-
Where hid behind a spreading woodD
An ancient Pict built mansion stoodD
I spied among an angel broodE
A female pairF
Sweet shone their high maternal bloodG
And father's airF
-
-
An ancient tower to memory broughtH
How Dettingen's bold hero foughtH
Still far from sinking into noughtH
It owns a lordH
Who far in western climates foughtH
With trusty swordH
-
-
Among the rest I well could spyI
One gallant graceful martial boyJ
The soldier sparkled in his eyeI
A diamond waterK
I blest that noble badge with joyJ
That owned me fraterK

After th stanza of the text at Dispensing good Near by arose a mansion fineL
The seat of many a muse divineL
Not rustic muses such as mineL
With holly crown'dH
But th' ancient tuneful laurell'd NineL
From classic groundH
-
-
I mourn'd the card that Fortune dealtH
To see where bonie Whitefoords dweltH
But other prospects made me meltH
That village nearM
There Nature Friendship Love I feltH
Fond mingling dearM
-
-
Hail Nature's pang more strong than deathN
Warm Friendship's glow like kindling wrathO
Love dearer than the parting breathN
Of dying friendH
Not ev'n with life's wild devious pathO
Your force shall endH
-
-
The Power that gave the soft alarmsP
In blooming Whitefoord's rosy charmsP
Still threats the tiny feather'd armsP
The barbed dartH
While lovely Wilhelmina warmsQ
The coldest heartH
-
-
After st stanza of the text at That to adore Where Lugar leaves his moorland plaidH
Where lately Want was idly laidH
I mark d busy bustling TradeH
In fervid flameR
Beneath a Patroness' aidH
Of noble nameR
-
-
Wild countless hills I could surveyS
And countless flocks as wild as theyS
But other scenes did charms displayS
That better pleaseT
Where polish'd manners dwell with GrayS
In rural easeT
-
-
Where Cessnock pours with gurgling soundH
And Irwine marking out the boundH
Enamour'd of the scenes aroundH
Slow runs his raceU
A name I doubly honour'd foundH
With knightly graceU
-
-
Brydon's brave ward I saw him standH
Fame humbly offering her handH
And near his kinsman's rustic bandH
With one accordH
Lamenting their late blessed landH
Must change its lordH
-
-
The owner of a pleasant spotH
Near and sandy wilds I last did noteH
A heart too warm a pulse too hotH
At times o'erranL
But large in ev'ry feature wroteH
Appear'd the ManL
