O HOW shall I unskilfu' tryA
The poet's occupationB
The tunefu' powers in happy hoursC
That whisper inspirationB
Even they maun dare an effort mairD
Than aught they ever gave usE
Ere they rehearse in equal verseF
The charms o' lovely DaviesG
-
-
Each eye it cheers when she appearsH
Like Phoebus in the morningI
When past the shower and every flowerJ
The garden is adorningI
As the wretch looks o'er Siberia's shoreK
When winter bound the wave isL
Sae droops our heart when we maun partM
Frae charming lovely DaviesG
-
-
Her smile's a gift frae 'boon the liftN
That maks us mair than princesO
A sceptred hand a king's commandP
Is in her darting glancesL
The man in arms 'gainst female charmsQ
Even he her willing slave isL
He hugs his chain and owns the reignR
Of conquering lovely DaviesG
-
-
My Muse to dream of such a themeS
Her feeble powers surrenderJ
The eagle's gaze alone surveysT
The sun's meridian splendourJ
I wad in vain essay the strainR
The deed too daring brave isL
I'll drap the lyre and mute admireJ
The charms o' lovely DaviesG
