Revered defender of beauteous StuartA
Of Stuart a name once respectedB
A name which to love was once mark of a true heartC
But now 'tis despis'd and neglectedD
-
Tho' something like moisture conglobes in my eyeE
Let no one misdeem me disloyalF
A poor friendless wand'rer may well claim a sighE
Still more if that wand'rer were royalF
-
My fathers that name have rever'd on a throneG
My fathers have fallen to right itH
Those fathers would spurn their degenerate sonI
That name should he scoffingly slight itH
-
Still in prayers for King George I most heartily joinJ
The Queen and the rest of the gentryK
Be they wise be they foolish is nothing of mineL
Their title's avow'd by my countryK
-
But why of that epocha make such a fussM
That gave us th' Electoral stemN
If bringing them over was lucky for usM
I'm sure 'twas as lucky for themN
-
But loyalty truce we're on dangerous groundO
Who knows how the fashions may alterP
The doctrine to day that is loyalty soundO
To morrow may bring us a halterP
-
I send you a trifle the head of a bardQ
A trifle scarce worthy your careR
But accept it good Sir as a mark of regardQ
Sincere as a saint's dying prayerR
-
Now life's chilly evening dim shades on your eyeE
And ushers the long dreary nightS
But you like the star that athwart gilds the skyE
Your course to the latest is brightS
