NO churchman am I for to rail and to writeA
No statesman nor soldier to plot or to fightA
No sly man of business contriving a snareB
For a big belly'd bottle's the whole of my careB
-
-
The peer I don't envy I give him his bowC
I scorn not the peasant though ever so lowD
But a club of good fellows like those that are hereE
And a bottle like this are my glory and careB
-
-
Here passes the squire on his brother his horseF
There centum per centum the cit with his purseG
But see you the Crown how it waves in the airB
There a big belly'd bottle still eases my careB
-
-
The wife of my bosom alas she did dieH
for sweet consolation to church I did flyH
I found that old Solomon proved it fairB
That a big belly'd bottle's a cure for all careB
-
-
I once was persuaded a venture to makeI
A letter inform'd me that all was to wreckJ
But the pursy old landlord just waddl'd upstairsK
With a glorious bottle that ended my caresK
-
-
Life's cares they are comforts a maxim laid downL
By the Bard what d'ye call him that wore the black gownL
And faith I agree with th' old prig to a hairB
For a big belly'd bottle's a heav'n of a careB
-
-
A STANZA ADDED IN A MASON LODGEThen fill up a bumper and make it o'erflowH
And honours masonic prepare for to throwD
May ev'ry true Brother of the Compass and SquareB
Have a big belly'd bottle when harass'd with careB
