LET other heroes boast their scarsA
The marks of sturt and strifeB
And other poets sing of warsC
The plagues of human lifeB
Shame fa' the fun wi' sword and gunD
To slap mankind like lumberE
I sing his name and nobler fameF
Wha multiplies our numberE
-
-
Great Nature spoke with air benignG
Go on ye human raceH
This lower world I you resignG
Be fruitful and increaseI
The liquid fire of strong desireE
I've pour'd it in each bosomJ
Here on this had does Mankind standK
And there is Beauty's blossomJ
-
-
The Hero of these artless strainsL
A lowly bard was heM
Who sung his rhymes in Coila's plainsL
With meikle mirth an'gleeM
Kind Nature's care had given his shareN
Large of the flaming currentO
And all devout he never soughtP
To stem the sacred torrentO
-
-
He felt the powerful high behestQ
Thrill vital thro' and thro'N
And sought a correspondent breastQ
To give obedience dueR
Propitious Powers screen'd the young flow'rsL
From mildews of abortionD
And low the bard a great rewardS
Has got a double portionD
-
-
Auld cantie Coil may count the dayT
As annual it returnsL
The third of Libra's equal swayT
That gave another BurnsL
With future rhymes an' other timesL
To emulate his sireN
To sing auld Coil in nobler styleU
With more poetic fireN
-
-
Ye Powers of peace and peaceful songV
Look down with gracious eyesL
And bless auld Coila large and longV
With multiplying joysL
Lang may she stand to prop the landK
The flow'r of ancient nationsL
And Burnses spring her fame to singW
To endless generationsL
