THIS wot ye all whom it concernsA
I Rhymer Robin alias BurnsA
October twenty thirdB
A ne'er to be forgotten dayC
Sae far I sprackl'd up the braeC
I dinner'd wi' a LordD
-
-
I've been at drucken writers' feastsE
Nay been bitch fou 'mang godly priestsE
Wi' rev'rence be it spokenF
I've even join'd the honour'd jorumG
When mighty Squireships of the quorumG
Their hydra drouth did slokenF
-
-
But wi' a Lord stand out my shinF
A Lord a Peer an Earl's sonF
Up higher yet my bonnetH
An' sic a Lord lang Scoth ells twaI
Our Peerage he o'erlooks them a'J
As I look o'er my sonnetK
-
-
But O for Hogarth's magic pow'rL
To show Sir Bardie's willyart glow'rL
An' how he star'd and stammer'dK
When goavin as if led wi' branksM
An' stumpin on his ploughman shanksM
He in the parlour hammer'dK
-
-
I sidying shelter'd in a nookN
An' at his Lordship steal't a lookN
Like some portentous omenF
Except good sense and social gleeO
An' what surpris'd me modestyO
I mark d nought uncommonF
-
-
I watch'd the symptoms o' the GreatK
The gentle pride the lordly stateK
The arrogant assumingP
The fient a pride nae pride had heO
Nor sauce nor state that I could seeO
Mair than an honest ploughmanF
-
-
Then from his Lordship I shall learnF
Henceforth to meet with unconcernF
One rank as weel's anotherQ
Nae honest worthy man need careR
To meet with noble youthful DaerR
For he but meets a brotherR
