'And send the godly in a pet to pray ' PopeA
-
O Thou that in the heavens does dwellB
Wha as it pleases best Thysel'B
Sends ane to heaven an' ten to hellB
A' for Thy gloryC
And no for onie guid or illB
They've done afore TheeC
-
I bless and praise Thy matchless mightD
When thousands Thou hast left in nightD
That I am here afore Thy sightD
For gifts an' graceE
A burning and a shining lightD
To a' this placeE
-
What was I or my generationF
That I should get sic exaltationF
I wha deserv'd most just damnationF
For broken lawsG
Sax thousand years ere my creationF
Thro' Adam's causeH
-
When from my mither's womb I fellB
Thou might hae plung'd me deep in hellB
To gnash my gooms and weep and wailB
In burnin lakesI
Where daned devils roar and yellB
Chain'd to their stakesI
-
Yet I am here a chosen sampleB
To show thy grace is great and ampleB
I'm here a pillar o' Thy templeB
Strong as a rockJ
A guide a buckler and exampleB
To a' Thy flockJ
-
O Lord Thou kens what zeal I bearK
When drinkers drink an' swearers swearK
An' sining here an' dancin thereK
Wi great and sma'L
For I am keepit by Thy fearM
Free frae them a'N
-
But yet O Lord confess I mustO
At times I'm fash'd wi' fleshly lustO
An' sometimes too in warldly trustO
Vile self gets inF
But Thou remembers we are dustO
Defil'd wi' sinF
-
O Lord yestreen Thou kens wi' MegP
Thy pardon I sincerely begP
O may't ne'er be a livin plagueQ
To my dishonourM
An' I'll ne'er lift a lawless legP
Again upon herM
-
Besides I farther maun allowB
Wi' Leezie's lass three times I trowM
But Lord that Friday I was fouR
When I cam near herM
Or else Thou kens Thy servant trueM
Wad never steer herM
-
Maybe Thou lets this fleshly thornF
Buffet Thy servant e'en and mornF
Lest he owre proud and high shou'd turnF
That he's sae giftedS
If sae Thy han' maun e'en be borneF
Until Thou lift itT
-
Lord mind Gaw'n Hamilton's desertsU
He drinks an' swears an' plays at cartesU
Yet has sae mony takin artsU
Wi' great and sma'L
Frae God's ain priest the people's heartsU
He steals awaV
-
An' when we chasten'd him thereforM
Thou kens how he bred sic a sploreM
An' set the warld in a roarM
O' laughing at usU
Curse Thou his basket and his storeM
Kail an' potatoesU
-
Lord hear my earnest cry and pray'rM
Against that Presbyt'ry o' AyrM
Thy strong right hand Lord make it bareM
Upo' their headsU
Lord visit them an' dinna spareM
For their misdeedsU
-
O Lord my God that glib tongu'd AikenF
My vera heart and flesh are quakinF
To think how we stood sweatin shakinF
An' p 'd wi' dreadW
While he wi' hingin lip an' snakinF
Held up his headW
-
Lord in Thy day o' vengeance try himL
Lord visit them wha did employ himL
And pass not in Thy mercy by themL
Nor hear them their pray'rM
But for Thy people's sake destroy themL
An' dinna spareM
-
But Lord remember me an' mineF
Wi' mercies temporal and divineF
That I for grace an' gear may shineF
Excell'd by naneF
And a' the glory shall be thineF
Amen AmenF
