Elegy On Miss Burnet, Of Monboddo. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CCDD EFGF GHGH IJIJ KGKG LMLM

Life ne'er exulted in so rich a prizeA
As Burnet lovely from her native skiesA
Nor envious death so triumph'd in a blowB
As that which laid th' accomplish'd Burnet lowB
-
Thy form and mind sweet maid can I forgetC
In richest ore the brightest jewel setC
In thee high Heaven above was truest shownD
As by his noblest work the Godhead best is knownD
-
In vain ye flaunt in summer's pride ye grovesE
Thou crystal streamlet with thy flowery shoreF
Ye woodland choir that chant your idle lovesG
Ye cease to charm Eliza is no moreF
-
Ye heathy wastes immix'd with reedy fensG
Ye mossy streams with sedge and rushes stor'dH
Ye rugged cliffs o'erhanging dreary glensG
To you I fly ye with my soul accordH
-
Princes whose cumb'rous pride was all their worthI
Shall venal lays their pompous exit hailJ
And thou sweet excellence forsake our earthI
And not a muse in honest grief bewailJ
-
We saw thee shine in youth and beauty's prideK
And virtue's light that beams beyond the spheresG
But like the sun eclips'd at morning tideK
Thou left'st us darkling in a world of tearsG
-
The parent's heart that nestled fond in theeL
That heart how sunk a prey to grief and careM
So leck'd the woodbine sweet yon aged treeL
So from it ravish'd leaves it bleak and bareM
