O cam ye here the fight to shunA
Or herd the sheep wi' me manB
Or were ye at the Sherra moorC
Or did the battle see manB
I saw the battle sair and teughD
And reekin red ran monie a sheughE
My heart for fear gae sough for soughD
To hear the thuds and see the cludsF
O clans frae woods in tartan dudsF
Wha glaum'd at icingdoms three manB
-
The red coat lads wi' black cockaudsF
To meet them were na slaw manB
They rush'd and push'd and bluid outgush'dG
And monie a bouk did fa' manB
The great Argyle led on his filesF
I wat they glanc'd for twenty milesF
They hough'd the clans like nine pin kylesF
They hack'd and hash'd while braid swords clashedG
And thro they dash'd and hew'd and smash'dG
Till fey men died awa manB
-
But had ye seen the philibegsF
And skyrin tartan trews manB
When in the teeth they daur'd our WhigsF
And Covenant trueblues manB
In lines extended lang and largeH
When baig'nets o'erpower'd the targeH
And thousands hasten'd to the chargeH
Wi' Highland wrath and frac the sheathI
Drew blades o' death till out o' breathJ
They fled like frightened dows manB
-
O how Deil Tam can that be trueK
The chase gaed frae the north manB
I saw mysel they did pursueK
The horseman back to Forth manB
And at Dunblane in my ain sightG
They took the brig wi a' their mightG
And straught to Stirling wing'd their flightG
But cursed lot the gates were shutG
And monie a huntit poor red coatG
For fear amaist did swarf manB
-
My sister Kate came up the gateG
Wi' crowdie unto me manB
She swoor she saw some rebels runA
To Perth and to Dundee manB
Their left hand general had nae skillL
The Angus lads had nae good willL
That day their neebors' bluid to spillL
For fear by foes that they should loseF
Their cogs o brose they scar'd at blowsF
And hameward fast did flee manB
-
They've lost some gallant gentlemenM
Amang the Highland clans manB
I fear my Lord Panmure is slainN
Or in his en'mies' hands manB
Now wad ye sing this double flightG
Some fell for wrang and some for rightG
But monie bade the world guid nightG
Say pell and mell wi' muskets' knellO
How Tories feil and Whigs to HellO
Flew off in frightened bands manB
