As I stood by yon roofless towerA
Where the wa' flower scents the dewy airB
Where th' howlet mourns in her ivy bowerA
And tells the midnight moon her careB
-
The winds were laid the air was stillC
The Stars they shot along the skyD
The fox was howling on the hillC
And the distant echoing glens replyD
-
The stream adown its hazelly pathE
Was rushing by the ruin'd wa'sF
Hasting to join the sweeping NithE
Whose distant roaring swells and fa'sF
-
The cauld blue north was streaming forthE
Her lights wi' hissing eerie dinG
Athort the lift they start and shiftH
Like fortune's favours tint as winG
-
By heedless chance I turn'd mine eyesF
And by the moon beam shook to seeF
A stern and stalwart ghaist ariseF
Attir'd as minstrels wont to beF
-
Had I a statue been o' staneG
His darin' look had daunted meF
And on his bonnet grav'd was plainG
The sacred posy 'Libertie '-
-
And frae his harp sic strains did flowI
Might rous'd the slumb'ring dead to hearJ
But oh it was a tale of woeI
As ever met a Briton's earJ
-
He sang wi' joy the former dayK
He weeping wail'd his latter timesF
But what he said it was nae playK
I winna ventur't in my rhymesF
