I know there shall dawn a dayA
Is it here on homely earthB
Is it yonder worlds awayA
Where the strange and new have birthB
That Power comes full in playA
-
Is it here with grass aboutC
Under befriending treesD
When shy buds venture outC
And the air by mild degreesD
Puts winter's death past doubtC
-
Is it up amid whirl and roarE
Of the elemental flameF
Which star flecks heaven's dark floorE
That new yet still the sameF
Full in play comes Power once moreE
-
Somewhere below aboveG
Shall a day dawn this I knowH
When Power which vainly stroveI
My weakness to o'erthrowE
Shall triumph I breathe I moveJ
-
I truly am at lastK
For a veil is rent betweenL
Me and the truth which passedK
Fitful half guessed half seenL
Grasped at not gained held fastK
-
I for my race and meM
Shall apprehend life's lawN
In the legend of man shall seeM
Writ large what small I sawN
In my life's tale both agreeM
-
As the record from youth to ageO
Of my own the single soulP
So the world's wide book one pageO
Deciphered explains the wholeP
Of our common heritageQ
-
How but from near to farE
Should knowledge proceed increaseR
Try the clod ere test the starE
Bring our inside strife to peaceR
Ere we wage on the outside warE
-
So my annals thus beginS
With body to life awokeT
Soul the immortal twinS
Of body which bore soul's yokeT
Since mortal and not akinS
-
By means of the flesh grown fitU
Mind in surview of thingsV
Now soared anon alitU
To treasure its gatheringsV
From the ranged expanse to witU
-
Nature earth's heaven's wide showH
Which taught all hope all fearE
Acquainted with joy and woeH
I could say Thus much is clearE
Doubt annulled thus much I knowH
-
All is effect of causeW
As it would has willed and doneX
Power and my mind's applauseY
Goes passing laws each oneX
To Omnipotence lord of lawsY
-
Head praises but heart refrainsZ
From loving's acknowledgmentU
Whole losses outweigh half gainsZ
Earth's good is with evil blentU
Good struggles but evil reignsZ
-
Yet since Earth's good proved goodU
IncontrovertiblyP
Worth loving I understoodU
How evil did mind descryE
Power's object to end pursuedU
-
Were haply as cloud acrossA2
Good's orb no orb itselfB2
Mere mind were it found at lossA2
Did it play the tricksy elfB2
And from life's gold purge the drossA2
-
Power is known infiniteU
Good struggles to be at bestU
Seems scanned by the human sightU
Tried by the senses' testU
Good palpably but with rightU
-
Therefore to mind's awardU
Of loving as power claims praiseC2
Power which finds naught too hardU
Fulfilling itself all waysC2
Unchecked unchanged while barredU
-
Baffled what good beganD2
Ends evil on every sideU
To Power submissive manD2
Breathes E'en as Thou art abideU
While to good Late found long soughtU
-
Would Power to a plenitudeU
But liberate but enlargeE2
Good's strait confine renewedU
Were ever the heart's dischargeE2
Of loving Else doubts intrudeU
-
For you dominate stars allP
For a sense informs you bruteU
Bird worm fly great and smallP
Each with your attributeU
Or low or majesticalP
-
Thou earth that embosomestU
Offspring of land and seaM
How thy hills first sank to restU
How thy vales bred herb and treeM
Which dizen thy mother breastU
-
Do I ask Be ignorantU
Ever the answer clangsM
Whereas if I plead world's wantU
Soul's sorrows and body's pangsM
Play the human applicantU
-
Is a remedy far to seekF2
I question and find responseM
I all men strong or weakF2
Conceive and declare at onceM
For each want its cure Power speakF2
-
Stop change avert decayA
Fix life fast banish deathG2
Eclipse from the star bid stayA
Abridge of no moment's breathG2
One creature Hence Night hail DayA
-
What need to confess againH2
No problem this to solveI2
By impotence Power once plainJ2
Proved Power let on Power devolveI2
Good's right to co equal reignJ2
-
Past mind's conception PowerE
Do I seek how star earth beastU
Bird worm fly gain their dowerE
For life's use most and leastU
Back from the search I cowerE
-
Do I seek what heals all harmK2
Nay hinders the harm at firstU
Saves earth Speak Power the charmK2
Keep the life there unamercedU
By chance change death's alarmK2
-
As promptly as mind conceivesM
Let Power in its turn declareE
Some law which wrong retrievesM
Abolishes everywhereE
What thwarts what irks what grievesM
-
Never to be and yetU
How easy it seems to senseM
Like man's if somehow metU
Power with its match immenseM
Love limitless unbesetU
-
By hindrance on every sideU
Conjectured nowise knownL2
Such may be could man confideU
Such would match were Love but showsM
Stript of the veils that hideU
-
Power's self now manifestU
So reads my record thineM2
O world how runs it GuessedU
Were the purport of that prime lineM2
Prophetic of all the restU
-
In a beginning GodU
Made heaven and earth Forth flashedU
Knowledge from star to clodU
Man knew things doubt abashedU
Closed its long periodU
-
Knowledge obtained Power praiseM
Had Good been manifestU
Broke out in cloudless blazeM
Unchequered as unrepressedU
In all things Good at bestU
-
Then praise all praise no blameF
Had hailed the perfection NoH
As Power's display the sameF
Be Good's praise forth shall flowH
Unisonous in acclaimF
-
Even as the world its lifeN2
So have I lived my ownL2
Power seen with Love at strifeN2
That sure this dimly shownL2
Good rare and evil rifeN2
-
Whereof the effect be faithO2
That some far day were foundU
Ripeness in things now ratheP2
Wrong righted each chain unboundU
Renewal born out of scatheP2
-
Why faith but to lift the loadU
To leaven the lump where liesM
Mind prostrate through knowledge owedU
To the loveless Power it triesM
To withstand how vain In flowedU
-
Ever resistless factU
No more than the passive clayA
Disputes the potter's actU
Could the whelmed mind disobeyA
Knowledge the cataractU
-
But perfect in every partU
Has the potter's moulded shapeQ2
Leap of man's quickened heartU
Throe of his thought's escapeQ2
Stings of his soul which dartU
-
Through the barrier of flesh till keenL
She climbs from the calm and clearE
Through turbidity all betweenL
From the known to the unknown hereE
Heaven's Shall be from Earth's Has beenS
-
Then life is to wake not sleepR2
Rise and not rest but pressM
From earth's level where blindly creepR2
Things perfected more or lessM
To the heaven's height far and steepR2
-
Where amid what strifes and stormsM
May wait the adventurous questU
Power is Love transports transformsM
Who aspired from worst to bestU
Sought the soul's world spurned the worms'M
-
I have faith such end shall beM
From the first Power was I knewS2
Life has made clear to meM
That strive but for closer viewS2
Love were as plain to seeM
-
When see When there dawns a dayA
If not on the homely earthP2
Then yonder worlds awayA
Where the strange and new have birthP2
And Power comes full in playA
