Stop rowing This one of our bye canalsA
O'er a certain bridge you have to crossB
That's named Of the Angel listen whyC
The name Of the Devil too much appallsD
Venetian acquaintance so his the lossB
While the gain goes look on highC
-
An angel visibly guards yon houseE
Above each scutcheon a pair stands heF
Enfolds them with droop of either wingG
The family's fortune were perilousH
Did he thence depart you will soon agreeF
If I hitch into verse the thingG
-
For once on a time this house belongedI
To a lawyer of note with law and to spareJ
But also with overmuch lust of gainK
In the matter of law you were nowise wrongedI
But alas for the lucre He picked you bareJ
To the bone Did folk complainK
-
I exact growled he work's rightful dueL
'Tis folk seek me not I seek themM
Advice at its price They succeed or failN
Get law in each case and a lesson tooL
Keep clear of the Courts is advice ad remM
They'll remember I'll be bailN
-
So he pocketed fee without a qualmM
What reason for squeamishness Labor doneO
To play he betook him with lightened heartP
Ate drank and made merry with song or PsalmM
Since the yoke of the Church is an easy oneO
Fits neck nor causes smartP
-
Brief never was such an extortionateQ
Rascal the word has escaped my teethR
And yet all's down in a book no assS
Indited believe me this reprobateT
Was punctual at prayer time gold lurked beneathR
Alloy of the rankest brassS
-
For play the extortioner as he mightU
Fleece folk each day and all day longV
There was this redeeming circumstanceW
He never lay down to sleep at nightU
But he put up a prayer first brief yet strongV
Our Lady avert mischanceW
-
Now it happened at close of a fructuous weekX
I must ask quoth he some Saint to dineY
I want that widow well out of my earsW
With her ailing and wailing Who bade her seekX
Redress at my hands 'She was wronged ' Folk whineY
If to Law wrong right appearsW
-
Matteo da Bascio he's my manZ
No less than Chief of the CapucinsW
His presence will surely suffumigateU
My house fools think lies under a banZ
If somebody loses what somebody winsW
Hark there he knocks at the grateU
-
Come in thou blessed of Mother ChurchA2
I go and prepare to bid that isW
My trusty and diligent servitorJ
Get all things in readiness Vain the searchA2
Through Venice for one to compare with thisW
My model of ministrants forJ
-
For once again nay three times overJ
My helpmate's an ape so intelligentU
I train him to drudge at household workB2
He toils and he moils I live in cloverJ
Oh you shall see There's a goodly scentU
From his cooking or I'm a TurkB2
-
Scarce need to descend and superviseW
I'll do it however wait here awhileC2
So down to the kitchen gayly scuttlesW
Our host nor notes the alarmed surmiseW
Of the holy man O depth of guileC2
He blindly guzzles and guttlesW
-
While who is it dresses the food and pourJ
The liquor Some fiend I make no doubtU
In likeness of which of the loathly brutesW
An ape Where hides he No bull that goresW
No bear that hugs 't is the mock and flowD2
Of an ape fiend's face that suitsW
-
So out with thee creature wherever thou hidestU
I charge thee by virtue of right do I judgeE2
There skulks he perdue crouching under the bedU
Well done What forsooth in beast's shape thou confidestU
I know and would name thee but that I begrudgeE2
Breath spent on such carrion InsteadU
-
I adjure thee by Stay laughed the portent that roseW
From floor up to ceiling No need to adjureJ
See Satan in person late ape by commandU
Of Him thou adjurest in vain A saint's noseW
Scents brimstone though incense be burned for a lureJ
Yet hence for I'm safe understandU
-
'Tis my charge to convey to fit punishment's placeW
This lawyer my liegeman for cruelty wroughtU
On his clients the widow and orphan poor soulsW
He has plagued by exactions which proved law's disgraceW
Made equity void and to nothingness broughtU
God's pity Fiends on with fresh coalsW
-
Stay nowise confounded withstands Hell its matchF2
How comes it were truth in this story of thineY
God's punishment suffered a minute's delayG2
Weeks months have elapsed since thou squattedst at watchH2
For a spring on thy victim what caused thee declineY
Advantage till challenged to dayG2
-
That challenge I meet with contempt quoth the fiendU
Thus much I acknowledge the man's armed in mailN
I wait till a joint's loose then quick ply my clawsW
Thy friend's one good custom he knows not has screenedU
His flesh hitherto from what else would assailN
At 'Save me Madonna ' I pauseW
-
That prayer did the losel but once pretermitU
My pounce were upon him I keep me attentU
He's in safety but till he's caught napping EnoughI2
Ay enough smiles the Saint for the biter is bitU
The spy caught in somnolence Vanish I'm sentU
To smooth up what fiends do in roughI2
-
I Vanish Through wall or through roof the ripostU
Grinned gayly My orders were 'Leave not unharmedU
The abode of this lawyer Do damage to proveJ2
'T was for something thou quittedst the land of the lostU
To add to their number this unit ' Though charmedU
From descent there on earth that's aboveK2
-
I may haply amerce him So do and begoneY
I command thee For look Though there's doorway behindU
And window before thee go straight through the wallL2
Leave a breach in the brickwork a gap in the stoneY
For who passes to stare at Spare speech I'm resignedU
Here goes roared the goblin as allL2
-
Wide bat wings spread arms and legs tail out a streamM
Crash obstacles went right and left as he soaredU
Or else sank was clean gone through the hole anyhowM2
The Saint returned thanks then a satisfied gleamM
On the bald polished pate showed that triumph was scoredU
To dinner with appetite nowM2
-
Down he trips In good time smirks the host Didst thou scentU
Rich savor of roast meat Where hides he my apeN2
Look alive be alert He's away to wash platesW
Sit down Saint What's here Dost examine a rentU
In the napkin thou twistest and twirlest AgapeN2
Ha blood is it drips nor abatesW
-
From thy wringing a cloth late was lavendered fairJ
What means such a marvel Just this does it meanY
I convince and convict thee of sin answers straightU
The Saint wringing on wringing ever oh rareJ
Blood blood from a napery snow not more cleanY
A miracle shows thee thy stateU
-
See blood thy extortions have wrung from the fleshO2
Of thy clients who sheep like arrived to be shornY
And left thee or fleeced to the quick or so flayedU
That behold their blood gurgles and grumbles afreshO2
To accuse thee Ay down on thy knees get up swornY
To restore Restitution once madeU
-
Sin no more Dost thou promise Absolved then ariseW
Upstairs follow me Art amazed at yon breachP2
Who battered and shattered and scattered escapeN2
From thy purlieus obtaining That Father of LiesW
Thou wast wont to extol for his feats all and eachP2
The Devil's disguised as thine apeN2
-
Be sure that our lawyer was torn by remorseW
Shed tears in a flood vowed and swore so to alterJ
His ways that how else could our Saint but declareJ
He was cleansed of past sin For sin future fare worseW
Thou undoubtedly wilt warned the Saint shouldst thou falterJ
One whit Oh for that have no careJ
-
I am firm in my purposed amendment But pritheeR
Must ever affront and affright me yon gapQ2
Who made it for exit may find it of useW
For entrance as easy If down in his smithyR
He forges me fetters when heated mayhapQ2
He'll up with an armful Broke looseW
-
How bar him out henceforth Judiciously urgedU
Was the good man's reply How to balk him is plainY
There's nothing the Devil objects to so muchR2
So speedily flies from as one of those purgedU
Of his presence the angels who erst formed his trainY
His their emperor Choose one of suchR2
-
Get fashioned his likeness and set him on highC
At back of the breach thus adroitly filled upQ2
Display him as guard of two scutcheons thy armsW
I warrant no devil attempts to get byC
And disturb thee so guarded Eat drink dine and supQ2
In thy rectitude safe from alarmsW
-
So said and so done See the angel has placeW
Where the Devil has passage All's down in a bookS2
Gainsay me Consult it Still faithless Trust meM
Trust Father Boverio who gave me the caseW
In his Annals gets of it by hook or by crookS2
Two confirmative witnesses threeM
-
Are surely enough to establish an actU
And thereby we learn would we ascertain truthR
To trust wise tradition which took at the timeM
Note that served till slow history ventured on factU
Though folk have their fling at tradition forsoothR
Row boys fore and aft rhyme and chimeM
