Rhyme Scheme: A BCBCB DED FGFGF H IJIJK H LMLML H KNKNK

AN OLD STORYA
-
I-
-
It was roses roses all the wayB
With myrtle mixed in my path like madC
The house roofs seemed to heave and swayB
The church spires flamed such flags they hadC
A year ago on this very dayB
-
II-
-
The air broke into a mist with bellsD
The old walls rocked with the crowd and criesE
Had I said Good folk mere noise repelsD
But give me your sun from yonder skies ''-
They had answered And afterward what else ''-
-
III-
-
Alack it was I who leaped at the sunF
To give it my loving friends to keepG
Nought man could do have I left undoneF
And you see my harvest what I reapG
This very day now a year is runF
-
IVH
-
There's nobody on the house tops nowI
Just a palsied few at the windows setJ
For the best of the sight is all allowI
At the Shambles' Gate or better yetJ
By the very scaffold's foot I trowK
-
VH
-
I go in the rain and more than needsL
A rope cuts both my wrists behindM
And I think by the feel my forehead bleedsL
For they fling whoever has a mindM
Stones at me for my year's misdeedsL
-
VIH
-
Thus I entered and thus I goK
In triumphs people have dropped down deadN
Paid by the world what dost thou oweK
Me '' God might question now insteadN
'Tis God shall repay I am safer soK
