Of the million or two more or lessB
I rule and possessB
One man for some cause undefinedC
Was least to my mindC
-
IIA
-
I struck him he grovelled of courseD
For what was his forceD
I pinned him to earth with my weightE
And persistence of hateE
And he lay would not moan would not curseF
As his lot might be worseF

-
Were the object less mean would he standG
At the swing of my handG
For obscurity helps him and blotsH
The hole where he squats ''-
So I set my five wits on the stretchI
To inveigle the wretchI
All in vain Gold and jewels I threwJ
Still he couched there perdueJ
I tempted his blood and his fleshI
Hid in roses my meshI
Choicest cates and the flagon's best spilthK
Still he kept to his filthK
-
IVL
-
Had he kith now or kin were accessB
To his heart did I pressB
Just a son or a mother to seizeM
No such booty as theseM
Were it simply a friend to pursueJ
'Mid my million or twoJ
Who could pay me in person or pelfL
What he owes me himselfL
No I could not but smile through my chafeL
For the fellow lay safeL
As his mates do the midge and the nitN
Through minuteness to witN

Then a humour more great took its placeO
At the thought of his faceO
The droop the low cares of the mouthK
The trouble uncouthK
'Twixt the brows all that air one is fainP
To put out of its painP
And no '' I admonished myselfL
Is one mocked by an elfL
Is one baffled by toad or by ratQ
The gravamen's in thatQ
How the lion who crouches to suitR
His back to my footS
Would admire that I stand in debateE
But the small turns the greatE
If it vexes you that is the thingT
Toad or rat vex the kingT
Though I waste half my realm to unearthK
Toad or rat 'tis well worth ''-

-
So I soberly laid my last planU
To extinguish the manU
Round his creep hole with never a breakV
Ran my fires for his sakeV
Over head did my thunder combineW
With my underground mineW
Till I looked from my labour contentX
To enjoy the eventX

-
When sudden how think ye the endY
Did I say without friend''Y
Say rather from marge to blue margeZ
The whole sky grew his targeZ
With the sun's self for visible bossA2
While an Arm ran acrossB2
Which the earth heaved beneath like a breastY
Where the wretch was safe prestY
Do you see Just my vengeance completeY
The man sprang to his feetY
Stood erect caught at God's skirts and prayedY
So I was afraidY
