You know we French stormed RatisbonB
A mile or so awayC
On a little mound NapoleonB
Stood on our storming dayC
With neck out thrust you fancy howD
Legs wide arms locked behindE
As if to balance the prone browD
Oppressive with its mindE

Just as perhaps he mused My plansF
That soar to earth may fallG
Let once my army leader LannesF
Waver at yonder wall ''-
Out 'twixt the battery smokes there flewH
A rider bound on boundI
Full galloping nor bridle drewH
Until he reached the moundI

Then off there flung in smiling joyJ
And held himself erectK
By just his horse's mane a boyJ
You hardly could suspectK
So tight he kept his lips compressedL
Scarce any blood came throughH
You looked twice ere you saw his breastL
Was all but shot in twoH

Well '' cried he Emperor by God's graceF
We've got you RatisbonB
The Marshal's in the market placeF
And you'll be there anonB
To see your flag bird flap his vansF
Where I to heart's desireN
Perched him '' The chief's eye flashed his plansF
Soared up again like fireN

The chief's eye flashed but presentlyM
Softened itself as sheathesF
A film the mother eagle's eyeA
When her bruised eaglet breathesF
You're wounded '' Nay '' the soldier's prideO
Touched to the quick he saidP
I'm killed Sire '' And his chief besideO
Smiling the boy fell deadP

Sanjay Kumar Das.: In the year 1978 in my schooling day I went through poem. As a teenager the last stanza touched my heart and I have been trying to recollect the name of the poem for a week to show my son. Finally I won the battle.
