O God where does this tend these struggling aimsA
What would I have What is this sleep which seemsB
To bound all can there be a waking pointC
Of crowning life The soul would never ruleD
It would be first in all things it would haveE
Its utmost pleasure filled but that completeF
Commanding for commanding sickens itG
The last point I can trace is rest beneathH
Some better essence than itself in weaknessI
This is myself not what I think should beJ
And what is that I hunger for but GodK
My God my God let me for once look on theeJ
As tho nought else existed we aloneL
And as creation crumbles my soul s sparkM
Expands till I can say Even from myselfN
I need thee and I feel thee and I love theeJ
I do not plead my rapture in thy worksO
For love of thee or that I feel as oneP
Who cannot die but there is that in meJ
Which turns to thee which loves or which should loveQ
-
Why have I girt myself with this hell dressR
Why have I laboured to put out my lifeS
Is it not in my nature to adoreT
And e en for all my reason do I notU
Feel him and thank him and pray to him nowV
Can I forgo the trust that he loves meJ
Do I not feel a love which only ONEP
O thou pale form so dimly seen deep eyedW
I have denied thee calmly do I notU
Pant when I read of thy consummate deedsX
And burn to see thy calm pure truths out flashY
The brightest gleams of earth s philosophyJ
Do I not shake to hear aught question theeJ
If I am erring save me madden meJ
Take from me powers and pleasures let me dieZ
Ages so I see thee I am knit roundA2
As with a charm by sin and lust and prideW
Yet tho my wandering dreams have seen all shapesB2
Of strange delight oft have I stood by theeJ
Have I been keeping lonely watch with theeJ
In the damp night by weeping OlivetW
Or leaning on thy bosom proudly lessR
Or dying with thee on the lonely crossC2
Or witnessing thy bursting from the tombD2
