He Ah the bird like flutingA
Through the ash tops yonderB
Bullfinch bubblings soft sounds suitingA
What sweet thoughts I wonderB
Fine pearled notes that surelyC
Gather dewdrop fashionD
Deep down in some heart which purelyC
Secretes globuled passionD
Passion insuppressiveE
Such is piped for certainD
Love no doubt nay love excessiveE
'Tis your ash tops curtainD
-
Would your ash tops openD
We might spy the playerB
Seek and find some sense which no penF
Yet from singer sayerB
Ever has extractedG
Never to my knowledgeH
Yet has pedantry enactedI
That in Cupid's CollegeJ
Just this variationD
Of the old old yearningA
Should by plain speech have salvationD
Yield new men new learningA
-
Love but what love nicelyC
New from old dispartedI
Would the player teach preciselyC
First of all be startedI
In my brain AssuranceK
Trust entire ContentmentI
Passion proved by much enduranceK
Then came not resentmentI
No but simply SorrowL
What was seen had vanishedI
Yesterday so blue To morrowL
Blank all sunshine banishedI
-
Hark 'Tis Hope resurgesK
Struggling through obstructionD
Forces a poor smile which vergesK
On joy's introductionD
Now perhaps mere MusingA
Holds earth such a wonderB
Fairy mortal soul sense fusingA
Past thought's power to sunderB
What calm AcquiescenceK
Daisied turf gives room toI
Trefoil plucked once in her presenceK
Growing by her tomb tooI
-
She All's your fancy spinningA
Here's the fact a neighborB
Never ending still beginningA
Recreates his laborB
Deep o'er desk he drudgesK
Adds divides subtracts andI
Multiplies until he judgesK
Noonday hour's exact sandI
Shows the hour glass emptiedI
Then comes lawful leisureB
Minutes rare from toil exemptedI
Fit to spend in pleasureB
-
Out then with what treatiseK
Youth's Complete InstructorB
How to play the Flute Quid petisK
Follow Youth's conductorB
On and on through EasyK
Up to Harder HardestI
Flute piece till thou flautist wheezyK
Possibly discardestI
Tootlings hoarse and huskyK
Mayst expend with courageH
Breath on tunes once bright now duskyK
Meant to cool thy porridgeH
-
That's an air of Tulou'sK
He maltreats persistentI
Till as lief I'd hear some Zulu'sK
Bone piped bag breath distentI
Madden native dancesK
I'm the man's familiarB
Unexpectedness enhancesK
What your ear's auxiliarB
Fancy finds suggestiveE
Listen That's legatoI
Rightly played his fingers restiveE
Touch as if staccatoI
-
He Ah you trick betrayerB
Telling tales unwise oneD
So the secret of the playerB
Was he could surprise oneD
Well nigh into trustingK
Here was a musicianD
Skilled consummately yet lustingK
Through no vile ambitionD
After making captiveE
All the world rewardedI
Amply by one stranger's raptureB
Common praise discardedI
-
So without assistanceK
Such as music rightlyK
Needs and claims defying distanceK
Overleaping lightlyK
Obstacles which hinderB
He for my approvalM
-
All the same and all the kinderB
Made mine what might move allN
Earth to kneel adoringK
Took while he piped Gounod'sK
Bit of passionate imploringK
Me for Juliet who knowsK
-
No as you explain thingsK
All's mere repetitionD
Practise pother of all vain thingsK
Why waste pooh or pish onO
Toilsome effort neverB
Ending still beginningK
After what should pay endeavorB
Right performance winningK
Weariness from you whoI
Ready to admire someP
Owl's fresh hooting Tu whit to whoI
Find stale thrush songs tiresomeP
-
She Songs Spring thought perfectionD
Summer criticisesK
What in May escaped detectionD
August past surprisesK
Notes and names each blunderB
You the just initiateI
Praise to heart's content what wonderB
Tootings I hear vitiateI
Romeo's serenadingK
I who times full twentyI
Turned to ice no ash tops aidingK
At his caldamenteI
-
So 'twas distance alteredI
Sharps to flats The missingK
Bar when syncopation falteredI
You thought paused for kissingK
Ash tops too feloniousK
Intercepted RatherB
Say they well nigh made euphoniousK
Discord helped to gatherB
Phrase by phrase turn patchesK
Into simulatedI
Unity which botching matchesK
Scraps redintegratedI
-
He Sweet are you suggestiveE
Of an old suspicionD
Which has always found me restiveE
To its admonitionD
When it ventured whisperB
Fool the strifes and strugglesK
Of your trembler blusher lisperB
Were so many jugglesK
Tricks tried oh so oftenD
Which once more do dutyI
Find again a heart to softenD
Soul to snare with beautyI
-
Birth blush of the briar roseK
Mist bloom of the hedge sloeI
Some one gainst the prize admire roseK
Would he when noon's wedge slowI
Sure has pushed expandedI
Rathe pink to raw rednessK
Would he covet sloe when sandedI
By road dust to deadnessK
So restore their valueI
Ply a water sprinkleM
Then guess sloe is fingered shall youI
Find in rose a wrinkleM
-
Here what played AquariusK
Distance ash tops aidingK
Reconciled scraps else contrariousK
Brightened stuff fast fadingK
Distance call your shynessK
Was the fair one peevishQ
Coyness softened out of slynessK
Was she cunning thievishQ
All but proved impostorB
Bear but one day's exileR
Ugly traits were wholly lost orB
Screened by fancies flexileR
-
Ash tops these you take meI
Fancies' interferenceK
ChangedI
But since I sleep don't wake meI
What if all's appearanceK
Is not outside seemingK
Real as substance insideI
Both are facts so leave me dreamingK
If who loses wins I'dI
Ever lose conjectureB
From one phrase trilled deftlyI
All the piece So end your lectureB
Let who lied be left lieR
