Her talk was all of woodland thingsA
Of little lives that passB
Away in one green afternoonC
Deep in the haunted grassB
-
For she had come from fairylandD
The morning of a dayE
When the world that still was AprilF
Was turning into MayE
-
Green leaves and silence and two eyesG
'T was so she seemed to meH
A silver shadow of the woodsI
Whisper and mysteryH
-
I looked into her woodland eyesG
And all my heart was hersJ
And then I led her by the handD
Home up my marble stairsK
-
And all my granite and my goldL
Was hers for her green eyesG
And all my sinful heart was hersJ
From sunset to sunriseG
-
I gave her all delight and easeM
That God had given to meH
I listened to fulfill her dreamsN
Rapt with expectancyH
-
But all I gave and all I didO
Brought but a weary smileP
Of gratitude upon her faceQ
As though a little whileP
-
She loitered in magnificenceQ
Of marble and of goldL
And waited to be home againR
When the dull tale was toldL
-
Sometimes in the chill galleriesQ
Unseen she deemed unheardS
I found her dancing like a leafT
And singing like a birdS
-
So lone a thing I never sawQ
In lonely earth or skyU
So merry and so sad a thingV
One sad one laughing eyeU
-
There came a day when on her heartW
A wildwood blossom layE
And the world that still was AprilF
Was turning into MayE
-
In the green eyes I saw a smileP
That turned my heart to stoneX
My wife that came from fairylandD
No longer was aloneX
-
For there had come a little handD
To show the green way homeY
Home through the leaves home through the dewZ
Home through the greenwood homeY
