I had no heart to join the danceA
I danced it all so long agoB
Ah light winged music out of FranceA
Let other feet glide to and froB
Weaving new patterns of romanceA
For bosoms of new fallen snowB
-
But leave me thus where I may hearC
The leafy rustle of the waltzD
The shell like murmur in my earC
The silken whisper fairy falseE
Of unseen rainbows circling nearF
And the glad shuddering of the wallsG
-
Another dance the dancers spinH
A shadow dance of mystic painI
And other partners enter inH
And dance within my lonely brainI
The swaying woodland shod in greenJ
The ghostly dancers of the rainI
-
The lonely dancers of the seaK
Foam footed on the sandy barL
The wizard dance of wind and treeK
The eddying dance of stream and starL
Yea all these dancers tread for meK
A measure mournful and bizarreL
-
An echo dance where ear is eyeM
And sound evokes the shapes of thingsN
Where out of silence and a sighM
The sad world like a picture springsN
As when some secret bird sweeps byM
We see it in the sound of wingsN
-
Those human feet upon the floorO
That eager pulse of rhythmic breathP
How sadly to an unknown shoreO
Each silver footfall hurryethP
A dance of autumn leaves no moreO
On the fantastic wind of deathP
-
Fire clasped to elemental fireQ
'Tis thus the solar atom whirlsN
The butterfly in aery gyreQ
On autumn mornings swarms and swirlsN
In dance of delicate desireQ
No other than these boys and girlsN
-
The same strange music everywhereQ
The woven paces just the sameR
Dancing from out the viewless airQ
Into the void from whence they cameR
Ah but they make a gallant flareQ
Against the dark each little flameR
-
And what if all the meaning liesN
Just in the music not in thoseN
Who dance thus with transfigured eyesN
Holding in vain each other closeN
Only the music never diesN
The dance goes on the dancer goesN
-
A woman dancing or a worldS
Poised on one crystal foot afarQ
In shining gulfs of silence whirledS
Like notes of the strange music areQ
Small shape against another curledS
Or dancing dust that makes a starQ
-
To him who plays the violinH
All one it is who joins the reelT
Drops from the dance or enters inH
So that the never ending wheelT
Cease not its mystic course to spinH
For weal or woe for woe or wealT
