On Mr. Gladstone's Retirement Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABBAABBA CDEEDC

The world grows Lilliput the great men goA
If greatness be it wears no outer signB
No more the signet of the mighty lineB
Stamps the great brow for all the world to knowA
Shrunken the mould of manhood is and loA
Fragments and fractions of the old divineB
Men pert of brain planned on a mean designB
Dapper and undistinguished such we growA
-
No more the leonine heroic headC
The ruling arm great heart and kingly eyeD
No more th' alchemic tongue that turned poor themesE
Of statecraft into golden glowing dreamsE
No more a man for man to deifyD
Laurel no more the heroic age is deadC
