O spirit of Life by whatsoe'er a nameA
Known among men even as our fathers bentB
Before thee and as little children cameA
For counsel in Life's dread predicamentC
Even we with all our loreD
That only beckons saddens and betraysE
Have no such key to the mysterious doorD
As he that kneels and praysE
-
The stern ascension of our climbing thoughtF
The martyred pilgrims of the soaring soulG
Bring us no nearer to the thing we soughtF
But only tempt us further from the goalG
Yea the eternal planH
Darkens with knowledge and our weary skillI
But makes us more of beast and less of manH
Fevered to hate and killI
-
Loves flees with frightened eyes the world it knewJ
Fades and dissolves and vanishes awayK
And the sole art the sons of men pursueJ
Is to out speed the slayer and to slayK
And lovely secrets wonL
From radiant nature and her magic lawsM
Serve but to stretch black deserts in the sunL
And glut destruction's jawsM
-
Life is it sweet no more the same blue skyN
Arches the woods the green earth filled with treesO
Glories with song happy it knows not whyN
Painted with flowers and warm with murmurous beesO
This earth this golden homeP
Where men like unto gods were wont to dwellQ
Was all this builded with the stars for domeP
For man to make it hellQ
-
Was it for this life blossomed with fair artsR
That for some paltry leagues of stolen landS
Or some poor squabble of contending martsR
Murder shall smudge out with its reeking handS
Man's faith and fanes alikeT
And man be man no more but a brute brainU
A primal horror mailed and fanged to strikeT
And bring the Dark againV
-
Fool of the Ages fitfully wise in vainU
Surely the heavens shall laugh the long long climbW
Up to the stars to dash him down againV
And all the travail of slow moving TimeW
And birth of radiant wingsX
A dream of pain an agony for naughtF
Highest and lowest of created thingsX
Man the proud fool of thoughtF
