Her Portrait Immortal Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDD EEFFGG HIHIJJ KLKLMM NONOPP QQFFEE

Must I believe this beauty wholly goneA
That in her picture here so deathless seemsB
And must I henceforth speak of her as oneC
Tells of some face of legend or of dreamsB
Still here and there remembered scarce believedD
Or held the fancy of a heart bereavedD
-
So beautiful she was ah was say IE
Yet doubt her dead I did not see her dieE
Only by others borne across the seaF
Came the incredible wild blasphemyF
They called her death as though it could be trueG
Of such an immortality as youG
-
True of these eyes that from her picture gazeH
Serene star steadfast as the heaven's own eyesI
Of that deep bosom white as hawthorn spraysH
Where my world weary head forever liesI
True of these quiet hands so marble coolJ
Still on her lap as lilies on a poolJ
-
Must I believe her dead that this sweet clayK
That even from her picture breathes perfumeL
Was carried on a fiery wind awayK
Or foully locked in the worm whispering tombL
This casket rifled ribald fingers thrustM
'Mid all her dainty treasure is this dustM
-
Once such a dewy marvel of a girlN
Warm as the sun and ivory as the moonO
All gone of her all lost except this curlN
Saved from her head one summer afternoonO
Tied with a little ribbon from her breastP
This only mine and Death's now all the restP
-
Must I believe it true Bid me not goQ
Where on her grave the English violets blowQ
Nay leave me if a dream indeed it beF
Still in my dream that she is somewhere sheF
Silent as was her wont It is a lieE
She is not dead I did not see her dieE
