Face in the tomb that lies so stillA
May I draw nearB
And watch your sleep and love youC
Without word or tearD
-
You smile your eyelids flickerE
Shall I tellF
How the world goes that lost youC
Shall I tellF
-
Ah love lift not your eyelidsG
'Tis the sameH
Old story that we laughed atI
Still the sameH
-
We knew it you and IJ
We knew it allK
Still is the small the greatL
The great the smallK
-
Still the cold lie quenchesM
The flaming truthN
And still embattled ageO
Wars against youthN
-
Yet I believe still in the ever living GodP
That fills your grave with perfumeQ
Writing your name in violets across the sodP
Shielding your holy face from hail and snowR
And though the withered stay the lovely goR
No transitory wrong or wrath of thingsS
Shatters the faith that each slow minute bringsS
-
That meadow nearer to us where your feetT
Shall flicker near me like white butterfliesU
That meadow where immortal lovers meetT
Gazing for ever in immortal eyesU
