Come my Celia let us proveA
While we may how wise is loveB
Love grown old and grey with yearsC
Love whose blood is thinned with tearsD
-
Philosophic lover IE
Broke my heart its love run dryE
And I warble passion's wordsF
But to hear them sing like birdsF
-
When the lightning struck my sideG
Love shrieked and for ever diedG
Leaving nought of him behindH
But these playthings of the mindH
-
Now the real play is overI
I can only act a loverI
Now the mimic play beginsJ
With its puppet joys and sinsJ
-
When the heart no longer feelsK
And the blood with caution stealsK
Then ah then my heart forgiveL
Then we dare begin to liveM
-
Dipped in Stygian waves of painN
We can never feel againO
Time may hurl his deadliest dartsP
Love may practise all his artsP
-
Like some Balder lo we standQ
Safe 'mid hurtling spear and brandQ
Only Death ah sweet Death throwR
Holds the fatal mistletoeR
-
Let the young unconquered soulS
Love the unit as the wholeS
Let the young uncheated eyeE
Love the face fore doomed to dieE
-
But my Celia not for usT
Pleasures half so hazardousT
Let us set our hearts on playU
'Tis alas the only wayU
-
Make of life the jest it isV
Laugh and fool and maybe kissW
Never for a moment dearX
Love so well to risk a fearX
-
Is not this my Celia sayU
The only wise and weary wayU
