In vain with whip and knotted cordA
The hirelings of hypocrisyB
Would make us comely for the LordA
Think ye God works through such as yeB
Paid Puritan plump PhariseeB
And lobbyist fingering his fat billC
Reeking of rum and briberyB
God needs not you to work His willC
-
We know you whom you serve abhorredA
Traducers of true pietyB
What tarnished gold is your rewardA
In Washington and AlbanyB
'Tis not from God you take your feeB
Another's purpose to fulfilC
You that are God's worst enemyB
God needs not you to work His willC
-
Not by the money changing hordeA
Base traders in the sanctuaryB
Nor by fanatic fire and swordA
Shall man grow as God wills him beB
In his own heart a voice hath heB
That whispers to him small and stillC
God gives him eyes His good to seeB
God needs not you to work His willC
-
-
ENVOIB
-
Dear Prince a sinner's honestyB
Is more to God much nearer stillC
Than the bribed hypocritic kneeB
God needs not you to work His willC
