To Two Friends married in the New Year	A

TO MR AND MRS WELCH	B

Another year to its last day	C
Like a lost sovereign runaway	C
Tips down the gloomy grid of time	D
In vain to holloa 'Stop it hey '	-
A cab horse that has taken fright	E
Be you a policeman stop you may	C
But not a sovereign mad with glee	F
That scampers to the grid perdie	E
And not a year that's taken flight	E
To both 'tis just a grim good night	E

But no the imagery say you	G
Is wondrous witty but not true	G
For the old year that last night went	E
Has not been so much lost as spent	E
You gave it in exchange to Death	H
For just twelve months of happy breath	H

It was a ticket to admit	E
Two happy people close to sit	E
A 'Season' ticket one might say	C
At Time's eternal passion play	C

O magic overture of Spring	I
O Summer like an Eastern King	I
O Autumn splendid widowed Queen	J
O Winter alabaster tomb	K
Where lie the regal twain serene	J
Gone to their yearly doom	K

But all you bought with that spent year	A
Ah friends it was as nothing was it	E
Nothing at all to hold compare	L
With what you buy with this New Year	A
A home ah me you could not buy	M
Another half so precious toy	E
With all the other years to come	N
As that grown up doll's house a home	O

O wine upon its threshold stone	P
And horse shoes on the lintel of it	E
And happy hearts to keep it warm	Q
And God Himself to love it	E
Dear little nest built snug on bough	R
Within the World Tree's mighty arms	S
I would I knew a spell that charms	S
Eternal safety from the storm	Q

To give you always stars above	T
And always roses on the bough	R
But then the Tree's own root is Love	T
Love love all love I vow	R
