And I behold once moreA
My old familiar haunts here the blue riverB
The same blue wonder that my infant eyeC
Admired sage doubting whence the traveller cameD
Whence brought his sunny bubbles ere he washedE
The fragrant flag roots in my father's fieldsF
And where thereafter in the world he wentG
Look here he is unaltered save that nowH
He hath broke his banks and flooded all the valesI
With his redundant wavesJ
Here is the rock where yet a simple childK
I caught with bended pin my earliest fishL
Much triumphing and these the fieldsF
Over whose flowers I chased the butterflyC
A blooming hunter of a fairy fineM
And hark where overhead the ancient crowsN
Hold their sour conversation in the skyC
These are the same but I am not the sameD
But wiser than I was and wise enoughO
Not to regret the changes tho' they costP
Me many a sigh Oh call not Nature dumbQ
These trees and stones are audible to meR
These idle flowers that tremble in the windS
I understand their faery syllablesT
And all their sad significance The windS
That rustles down the well known forest roadU
It hath a sound more eloquent than speechV
The stream the trees the grass the sighing windS
All of them utter sounds of 'monishmentS
And grave parental loveW
They are not of our race they seem to sayX
And yet have knowledge of our moral raceY
And somewhat of majestic sympathyR
Something of pity for the puny clayX
That holds and boasts the immeasurable mindS
I feel as I were welcome to these treesZ
After long months of weary wanderingA2
Acknowledged by their hospitable boughsB2
They know me as their son for side by sideS
They were coeval with my ancestorsC2
Adorned with them my country's primitive timesD2
And soon may give my dust their funeral shadeS
