O tenderly the haughty dayA
Fills his blue urn with fireB
One morn is in the mighty heavenC
And one in our desireB
-
The cannon booms from town to townD
Our pulses beat not lessE
The joy bells chime their tidings downD
Which children's voices blessE
-
For He that flung the broad blue foldF
O'er mantling land and seaG
One third part of the sky unrolledF
For the banner of the freeG
-
The men are ripe of Saxon kindF
To build an equal stateF
To take the statute from the mindF
And make of duty fateF
-
United States the ages pleadF
Present and Past in under songH
Go put your creed into your deedF
Nor speak with double tongueI
-
For sea and land don't understandF
Nor skies without a frownD
See rights for which the one hand fightsJ
By the other cloven downD
-
Be just at home then write your scrollK
Of honor o'er the seaG
And bid the broad Atlantic rollK
A ferry of the freeG
-
And henceforth there shall be no chainL
Save underneath the seaG
The wires shall murmur through the mainL
Sweet songs of libertyG
-
The conscious stars accord aboveM
The waters wild belowN
And under through the cable woveO
Her fiery errands goN
-
For He that worketh high and wiseP
Nor pauses in his planQ
Will take the sun out of the skiesP
Ere freedom out of manQ
