Hymn Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE GHGH IJKJ LMLM NOPO QRIM S

There is in all the sons of menA
A love that in the spirit dwellsB
That panteth after things unseenC
And tidings of the future tellsB
-
And God hath built his altar hereD
To keep this fire of faith aliveE
And sent his priests in holy fearF
To speak the truth for truth to striveE
-
And hither come the pensive trainG
Of rich and poor of young and oldH
Of ardent youth untouched by painG
Of thoughtful maids and manhood boldH
-
They seek a friend to speak the wordI
Already trembling on their tongueJ
To touch with prophet's hand the chordK
Which God in human hearts hath strungJ
-
To speak the plain reproof of sinL
That sounded in the soul beforeM
And bid you let the angels inL
That knock at meek contrition's doorM
-
A friend to lift the curtain upN
That hides from man the mortal goalO
And with glad thoughts of faith and hopeP
Surprise the exulting soulO
-
Sole source of light and hope assuredQ
O touch thy servant's lips with powerR
So shall he speak to us the wordI
Thyself dost give forever moreM
-
