From The Phi Beta Kappa Poem Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDEEFFGGHHIIJJ KK

Ill fits the abstemious Muse a crown to weaveA
For living brows ill fits them to receiveA
And yet if virtue abrogate the lawB
One portrait fact or fancy we may drawB
A form which Nature cast in the heroic mouldC
Of them who rescued liberty of oldC
He when the rising storm of party roaredD
Brought his great forehead to the council boardD
There while hot heads perplexed with fears the stateE
Calm as the morn the manly patriot sateE
Seemed when at last his clarion accents brokeF
As if the conscience of the country spokeF
Not on its base Monadnoc surer stoodG
Than he to common sense and common goodG
No mimic from his breast his counsel drewH
Believed the eloquent was aye the trueH
He bridged the gulf from th' alway good and wiseI
To that within the vision of small eyesI
Self centred when he launched the genuine wordJ
It shook or captivated all who heardJ
Ran from his mouth to mountains and the seaK
And burned in noble hearts proverb and prophecyK
