Freedom Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDEFFGGHHIIJJKK CGGL

Once I wished I might rehearseA
Freedom's paean in my verseA
That the slave who caught the strainB
Should throb until he snapped his chainB
But the Spirit said 'Not soC
Speak it not or speak it lowC
Name not lightly to be saidD
Gift too precious to be prayedE
Passion not to be expressedF
But by heaving of the breastF
Yet wouldst thou the mountain findG
Where this deity is shrinedG
Who gives to seas and sunset skiesH
Their unspent beauty of surpriseH
And when it lists him waken canI
Brute or savage into manI
Or if in thy heart he shineJ
Blends the starry fates with thineJ
Draws angels nigh to dwell with theeK
And makes thy thoughts archangels beK
Freedom's secret wilt thou knowC
Counsel not with flesh and bloodG
Loiter not for cloak or foodG
Right thou feelest rush to do 'L
