Knows he who tills this lonely fieldA
To reap its scanty cornB
What mystic fruit his acres yieldA
At midnight and at mornB
-
In the long sunny afternoonC
The plain was full of ghostsD
I wandered up I wandered downE
Beset by pensive hostsD
-
The winding Concord gleamed belowF
Pouring as wide a floodG
As when my brothers long agoF
Came with me to the woodH
-
But they are gone the holy onesI
Who trod with me this lonely valeJ
The strong star bright companionsI
Are silent low and paleJ
-
My good my noble in their primeK
Who made this world the feast it wasL
Who learned with me the lore of timeK
Who loved this dwelling placeM
-
They took this valley for their toyN
They played with it in every moodO
A cell for prayer a hall for joyN
They treated nature as they wouldH
-
They colored the horizon roundP
Stars flamed and faded as they badeQ
All echoes hearkened for their soundP
They made the woodlands glad or madR
-
I touch this flower of silken leafS
Which once our childhood knewT
Its soft leaves wound me with a griefS
Whose balsam never grewT
-
Hearken to yon pine warblerU
Singing aloft in the treeV
Hearest thou O travellerU
What he singeth to meV
Not unless God made sharp thine earW
With sorrow such as mineX
Out of that delicate lay couldst thouY
The heavy dirge divineX
-
Go lonely man it saithY
They loved thee from their birthY
Their hands were pure and pure their faithY
There are no such hearts on earthY
-
Ye drew one mother's milkZ
One chamber held ye allA2
A very tender historyV
Did in your childhood fallA2
-
Ye cannot unlock your heartB2
The key is gone with themC2
The silent organ loudest chantsD2
The master's requiemE2
