The word of the Lord by nightA
To the watching Pilgrims cameB
As they sat by the seasideC
And filled their hearts with flameB
-
God said I am tired of kingsD
I suffer them no moreE
Up to my ear the morning bringsD
The outrage of the poorF
-
Think ye I made this ballG
A field of havoc and warE
Where tyrants great and tyrants smallG
Might harry the weak and poorF
-
My angel his name is FreedomH
Choose him to be your kingI
He shall cut pathways east and westJ
And fend you with his wingI
-
Lo I uncover the landK
Which I hid of old time in the WestJ
As the sculptor uncovers the statueL
When he has wrought his bestJ
-
I show Columbia of the rocksM
Which dip their foot in the seasN
And soar to the air borne flocksM
Of clouds and the boreal fleeceO
-
I will divide my goodsP
Call in the wretch and slaveQ
None shall rule but the humbleR
And none but Toil shall haveS
-
I will have never a nobleR
No lineage counted greatT
Fishers and choppers and ploughmenU
Shall constitute a stateT
-
Go cut down trees in the forestV
And trim the straightest boughsW
Cut down the trees in the forestV
And build me a wooden houseX
-
Call the people togetherY
The young men and the siresZ
The digger in the harvest fieldA2
Hireling and him that hiresB2
-
And here in a pine state houseX
They shall choose men to ruleC2
In every needful facultyD2
In church and state and schoolC2
-
Lo now if these poor menU
Can govern the land and seaD2
And make just laws below the sunU
As planets faithful beD2
-
And ye shall succour menU
'T is nobleness to serveE2
Help them who cannot help againU
Beware from right to swerveE2
-
I break your bonds and mastershipsD2
And I unchain the slaveQ
Free be his heart and hand henceforthF2
As wind and wandering waveQ
-
I cause from every creatureY
His proper good to flowG2
As much as he is and doethF2
So much he shall bestowG2
-
But laying hands on anotherY
To coin his labour and sweatH2
He goes in pawn to his victimH
For eternal years in debtH2
-
To day unbind the captiveI2
So only are ye unboundJ2
Lift up a people from the dustV
Trump of their rescue soundJ2
-
Pay ransom to the ownerY
And fill the bag to the brimK2
Who is the owner The slave is ownerY
And ever was Pay himK2
-
O North give him beauty for ragsD2
And honour O South for his shameB
Nevada coin thy golden cragsD2
With Freedom's image and nameB
-
Up and the dusky raceD2
That sat in darkness longL2
Be swift their feet as antelopesD2
And as behemoth strongL2
-
Come East and West and NorthF2
By races as snow flakesD2
And carry my purpose forthF2
Which neither halts nor shakesD2
-
My will fulfilled shall beD2
For in daylight or in darkM2
My thunderbolt has eyes to seeD2
His way home to the markM2
