A Nation's Strength Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IBIB JAJA

What makes a nation's pillars highA
And its foundations strongB
What makes it mighty to defyA
The foes that round it throngB
-
It is not gold Its kingdoms grandC
Go down in battle shockD
Its shafts are laid on sinking sandC
Not on abiding rockD
-
Is it the sword Ask the red dustE
Of empires passed awayF
The blood has turned their stones to rustE
Their glory to decayF
-
And is it pride Ah that bright crownG
Has seemed to nations sweetH
But God has struck its luster downG
In ashes at his feetH
-
Not gold but only men can makeI
A people great and strongB
Men who for truth and honor's sakeI
Stand fast and suffer longB
-
Brave men who work while others sleepJ
Who dare while others flyA
They build a nation's pillars deepJ
And lift them to the skyA
