I was walking by the road I do notA
know why when the noonday was pastB
and bamboo branches rustled in theC
windD
The prone shadows with their outE
stretched arms clung to the feet ofF
the hurrying lightG
The koels were weary of theirH
songsI
I was walking by the road I do notA
know whyJ
The hut by the side of the water isK
shaded by an overhanging treeL
Some on was busy with her workM
and her bangles made music in theC
cornerN
I stood before this hut I know notA
whyJ
The narrow winding road crossesK
many a mustard field and many aC
mango forestO
It passes by the temple of theC
village and the market at the riverN
landing placeP
I stopped by this hut I do not knowQ
whyJ
Years ago it was a day of breezyL
March when the murmur of the springR
was languorous and mango blossomsS
were dropping on the dustO
The rippling water leapt and lickedT
the brass vessel that stood on theC
landing stepU
I think of that day of breezy MarchV
I do not know whyJ
Shadows are deepening and cattleW
returning to their foldsX
The light is grey upon the lonelyL
meadows and the villagers are waitingR
for the ferry at the bankY
I slowly return upon my steps IJ
do not know whyJ
