Pity in place of loveA
That pettiest of giftsB
Is but a sugar coating over neglectC
Any passerby can make a gift of itD
To a street beggarE
Only to forget the moment the first corner is turnedF
I had not hoped for anything more that dayG
-
You left during the last watch of nightH
I had hoped you would say goodbyeI
Just say 'Adieu' before going awayG
What you had said another dayG
What I shall never hear againJ
In their place just that one wordK
Bound by the thin fabric of a little compassionL
Would even that have been too much for you to bearM
-
When I first awoke from sleepN
My heart fluttered with fearO
Lest the time had been overE
I rushed out of bedP
The distant church clock chimed half past twelveQ
I sat waiting near the door of my roomR
Resting my head against itD
Facing the porch through which you would come outS
-
Even that tiniest of chancesT
Was snatched away by fate from hapless meU
I fell asleepN
Shortly before you leftV
Perhaps you cast a sidelong glanceW
At my reclining bodyU
Like a broken boat left high and dryI
Perhaps you walked away with careM
Lest you wake me upX
Awaking with a start I knew at onceY
That my vigil had been wastedZ
I realised what was to go went away in a momentA2
What was to stay behind stayed onB2
For all timeC2
-
Silence everywhereM
Like that of a birds' nest bereft of birdsD2
On the bough of a songless treeU
With the lifeless light of the waning moon was now blendedZ
The pallor of dawnE2
Spreading itself over the greyness of my empty lifeF2
I walked towards your bedroomR
For no reasonL
Outside the doorG2
Burnt a smoky lantern covered with sootH2
The porch smelt of the smouldering wickI2
Over the abandoned bed the flaps of the rolled up mosquito netJ2
Fluttered a little in the breezeK2
Seen in the sky outside through the windowL2
Was the morning starM2
Witness of all sleepless peopleN2
Bereft of hopeO2
-
Suddenly I found you had left behind by mistakeP2
Your gold mounted ivory walking stickI2
If there were time I thoughtQ2
You might come back from the station to look for itD
But not becauseR2
You had not seen me before going awayG
