The Old Grey Mare Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHII JKJKLL MNONCC

There's a line of rails on an upland greenA
With a good take off and a landing soundB
Six fences grim as were ever seenA
And it's there I would be with fox and houndB
Oh that was a country free and fairC
For the raking stride of my old grey mareC
-
With her raking stride and her head borne highD
And her ears a prick and her heart a flameE
And the steady look of her deep brown eyeD
I warrant the grey mare knew the gameE
It was Up to it lass and before I knewF
We were up and over and on we flewF
-
The rooks from the grass got up and soG
With a caw and flap away they wentH
When the grey mare made up her mind to goG
At the tail of the bounds on a breast high scentH
The best of the startled rooks might failI
To match her flight over post and railI
-
While some of the thrusters grew unnervedJ
And looked and longed for an open gateK
And one crashed down and another swervedJ
She went for it always true and straightK
She pounded the lot for she made it goodL
With never a touch of splintered woodL
-
Full many a year has come and goneM
Since last she gathered her spring for meN
And lifted me up and so flew onO
Unchecked in a country fair and freeN
I've ridden a score since then but ne'erC
Crossed one that could live with the old grey mareC
