Rupert is dead and Rupert was my friendA
Only surviving son of so it ranB
Beloved husband and the rest of itC
But six months back I saw him full of lifeD
Ardent for fighting now he lies at easeE
In some obscure but splendid field of FranceF
His strivings over and his conflicts doneG
He was a fellow of most joyous moodsH
And quaint contrivings ever on the pointI
Of shaking fame and fortune by the handJ
But always baulked of meeting them at lastK
He could not brook and always so declaredL
The weak pomposities of little menM
Scorned all the tin gods of our petty worldN
And plunged headlong into imprudencesH
And smashed conventions with a reckless zealO
Holding his luck and not himself to blameP
For aught that might betide when reckoning cameP
But he was true as steel and staunch as oakQ
And if he pledged his word he bore it outR
Unswerving to the finish and he gaveS
Whate'er he had of strength to help a friendA
-
When the great summons came he rushed to armsH
Counting no cost and all intent to serveT
His country and to prove himself a manB
Yet he could laugh at all his ardour tooU
And find some fun in glory as a childV
Laughs at a bauble but will guard it wellW
Now he is fall'n and on his shining browX
Glory has set her everlasting sealO
-
I like to think how cheerily he talkedY
Amid the ceaseless tumult of the gunsH
How when the word was given he stood erectZ
Sprang from the trench and shouting to his menM
Led them forthright to where the sullen foeA2
Waited their coming and his brain took fireB2
And all was exultation and a highC2
Heroic ardour and a pulse of joyD2
Forward his cry rang out and all his menM
Thundered behind him with their eyes ablazeH
Forward for England Clear the beggars outR
Remember and death found him and he fellW
Fronting the Germans and the rush swept onE2
-
Thrice blessed fate We linger here and droopF2
Beneath the heavy burden of our yearsH
And may not though we envy give our livesH
For England and for honour and for rightG2
But still must wear our weary hours awayH2
While he that happy fighter in one leapI2
From imperfection to perfection borneJ2
Breaks through the bonds that bound him to the earthK2
Now of his failures is a triumph madeL2
His very faults are into virtues turnedM2
And reft for ever from the haunts of menM
He wears immortal honour and is joinedN2
With those who fought for England and are deadO2
