To S. M. A Young African Painter, On Seeing His Works Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEEFFGGHIJJKKLLMM NNKKOPQQJJRREE

TO show the lab'ring bosom's deep intentA
And thought in living characters to paintB
When first thy pencil did those beauties giveC
And breathing figures learnt from thee to liveD
How did those prospects give my soul delightE
A new creation rushing on my sightE
Still wond'rous youth each noble path pursueF
On deathless glories fix thine ardent viewF
Still may the painter's and the poet's fireG
To aid thy pencil and thy verse conspireG
And may the charms of each seraphic themeH
Conduct thy footsteps to immortal fameI
High to the blissful wonders of the skiesJ
Elate thy soul and raise thy wishful eyesJ
Thrice happy when exalted to surveyK
That splendid city crown'd with endless dayK
Whose twice six gates on radiant hinges ringL
Celestial Salem blooms in endless springL
Calm and serene thy moments glide alongM
And may the muse inspire each future songM
Still with the sweets of contemplation bless'dN
May peace with balmy wings your soul investN
But when these shades of time are chas'd awayK
And darkness ends in everlasting dayK
On what seraphic pinions shall we moveO
And view the landscapes in the realms aboveP
There shall thy tongue in heav'nly murmurs flowQ
And there my muse with heav'nly transport glowQ
No more to tell of Damon's tender sighsJ
Or rising radiance of Aurora's eyesJ
For nobler themes demand a nobler strainR
And purer language on th' ethereal plainR
Cease gentle muse the solemn gloom of nightE
Now seals the fair creation from my sightE
