Where human nature in vast ruin lies | A |
With pensive mind I search the drear abode | B |
Where the great conqu'ror has his spoils bestow'd | B |
There there the offspring of six thousand years | C |
In endless numbers to my view appears | C |
Whole kingdoms in his gloomy den are thrust | D |
And nations mix with their primeval dust | D |

His is the present his the age to come | F |
See here a brother here a sister spread | G |
And a sweet daughter mingled with the dead | G |
But Madam let your grief be laid aside | H |
And let the fountain of your tears be dry'd | H |
In vain they flow to wet the dusty plain | I |
Your sighs are wafted to the skies in vain | I |
Your pains they witness but they can no more | J |
While Death reigns tyrant o'er this mortal shore | J |
The glowing stars and silver queen of light | H |
At last must perish in the gloom of night | H |
Resign thy friends to that Almighty hand | H |
Which gave them life and bow to his command | H |
Thine Avis give without a murm'ring heart | H |
Though half thy soul be fated to depart | H |
To shining guards consign thine infant care | K |
To waft triumphant through the seas of air | K |
Her soul enlarg'd to heav'nly pleasure springs | L |
She feeds on truth and uncreated things | L |
Methinks I hear her in the realms above | M |
And leaning forward with a filial love | M |
Invite you there to share immortal bliss | N |

With tow'ring hopes and growing grace arise | A |
And seek beatitude beyond the skies | A |
