Thy various works imperial queen we seeA
How bright their forms how deck'd with pomp by theeA
Thy wond'rous acts in beauteous order standB
And all attest how potent is thine handB
-
From Helicon's refulgent heights attendC
Ye sacred choir and my attempts befriendC
To tell her glories with a faithful tongueD
Ye blooming graces triumph in my songE
-
Now here now there the roving Fancy fliesF
Till some lov'd object strikes her wand'ring eyesF
Whose silken fetters all the senses bindG
And soft captivity involves the mindG
-
Imagination who can sing thy forceH
Or who describe the swiftness of thy courseH
Soaring through air to find the bright abodeI
Th' empyreal palace of the thund'ring GodJ
We on thy pinions can surpass the windG
And leave the rolling universe behindG
From star to star the mental optics roveK
Measure the skies and range the realms aboveL
There in one view we grasp the mighty wholeM
Or with new worlds amaze th' unbounded soulM
-
Though Winter frowns to Fancy's raptur'd eyesF
The fields may flourish and gay scenes ariseF
The frozen deeps may break their iron bandsN
And bid their waters murmur o'er the sandsN
Fair Flora may resume her fragrant reignO
And with her flow'ry riches deck the plainO
Sylvanus may diffuse his honours roundP
And all the forest may with leaves be crown'dP
Show'rs may descend and dews their gems discloseQ
And nectar sparkle on the blooming roseQ
-
Such is thy pow'r nor are thine orders vainO
O thou the leader of the mental trainO
In full perfection all thy works are wroughtR
And thine the sceptre o'er the realms of thoughtR
Before thy throne the subject passions bowS
Of subject passions sov'reign ruler thouS
At thy command joy rushes on the heartT
And through the glowing veins the spirits dartT
-
Fancy might now her silken pinions tryU
To rise from earth and sweep th' expanse on highU
From Tithon's bed now might Aurora riseF
Her cheeks all glowing with celestial diesF
While a pure stream of light o'erflows the skiesF
The monarch of the day I might beholdV
And all the mountains tipt with radiant goldV
But I reluctant leave the pleasing viewsW
Which Fancy dresses to delight the MuseW
Winter austere forbids me to aspireX
And northern tempests damp the rising fireY
They chill the tides of Fancy's flowing seaA
Cease then my song cease the unequal layZ
