-
Oh there are spirits of the airB
And genii of the evening breezeC
And gentle ghosts with eyes as fairB
As star beams among twilight treesC
Such lovely ministers to meetD
Oft hast thou turned from men thy lonely feetD
-
With mountain winds and babbling springsE
And moonlight seas that are the voiceF
Of these inexplicable thingsE
Thou didst hold commune and rejoiceF
When they did answer thee but theyG
Cast like a worthless boon thy love awayG
-
And thou hast sought in starry eyesH
Beams that were never meant for thineA
Another s wealth tame sacrificeI
To a fond faith still dost thou pineA
Still dost thou hope that greeting handsJ
Voice looks or lips may answer thy demandsJ
-
Ah wherefore didst thou build thine hopeK
On the false earth s inconstancyL
Did thine own mind afford no scopeK
Of love or moving thoughts to theeL
That natural scenes or human smilesM
Could steal the power to wind thee in their wilesM
-
Yes all the faithless smiles are fledN
Whose falsehood left thee broken heartedO
The glory of the moon is deadN
Night s ghosts and dreams have now departedO
Thine own soul still is true to theeL
But changed to a foul fiend through miseryL
-
This fiend whose ghastly presence everP
Beside thee like thy shadow hangsQ
Dream not to chase the mad endeavourP
Would scourge thee to severer pangsQ
Be as thou art Thy settled fateR
Dark as it is all change would aggravateR
