seas and the streamsA
I bear light shade for the leaves when laidB
In their noonday dreamsA
From my wings are shaken the dews that wakenC
The sweet buds every oneC
When rocked to rest on their mother's breastD
As she dances about the sunC
I wield the flail of the lashing hailE
And whiten the green plains underF
And then again I dissolve it in rainG
And laugh as I pass in thunderF
-
I sift the snow on the mountains belowH
And their great pines groan aghastI
And all the night 'tis my pillow whiteJ
While I sleep in the arms of the blastI
Sublime on the towers of my skiey bowersK
Lightning my pilot sitsL
In a cavern under is fettered the thunderF
It struggles and howls at fitsL
-
Over earth and ocean with gentle motionC
This pilot is guiding meM
Lured by the love of the genii that moveN
In the depths of the purple seaM
Over the rills and the crags and the hillsO
Over the lakes and the plainsP
Wherever he dream under mountain or streamQ
The Spirit he loves remainsP
And I all the while bask in Heaven's blue smileR
Whilst he is dissolving in rainsP
-
The sanguine Sunrise with his meteor eyesS
And his burning plumes outspreadI
Leaps on the back of my sailing rackT
When the morning star shines deadI
As on the jag of a mountain cragT
Which an earthquake rocks and swingsU
An eagle alit one moment may sitI
In the light of its golden wingsU
And when Sunset may breathe from the lit sea beneathV
Its ardors of rest and of loveW
-
And the crimson pall of eve may fallX
From the depth of Heaven aboveW
With wings folded I rest on mine aery nestI
As still as a brooding doveW
That orbed maiden with white fire ladenC
Whom mortals call the MoonY
Glides glimmering o'er my fleece like floorZ
By the midnight breezes strewnY
And wherever the beat of her unseen feetI
Which only the angels hearA2
May have broken the woof of my tent's thin roofB2
The stars peep behind her and peerC2
And I laugh to see them whirl and fleeM
Like a swarm of golden beesD2
When I widen the rent in my wind built tentI
Till the calm rivers lakes and seasD2
Like strips of the sky fallen through me on highE2
Are each paved with the moon and theseD2
-
I bind the Sun's throne with a burning zoneF2
And the Moon's with a girdle of pearlG2
The volcanoes are dim and the stars reel and swimH2
When the whirlwinds my banner unfurlG2
From cape to cape with a bridge like shapeI2
Over a torrent seaM
Sunbeam proof I hang like a roofB2
The mountains its columns beM
The triumphal arch through which I marchJ2
With hurricane fire and snowH
When the Powers of the air are chained to my chairK2
Is the million colored bowL2
The sphere fire above its soft colors woveM2
While the moist Earth was laughing belowH
-
I am the daughter of Earth and WaterF
And the nursling of the SkyE2
I pass through the pores of the ocean and shoresN2
I change but I cannot dieE2
For after the rain when with never a stainG
The pavilion of Heaven is bareK2
And the winds and sunbeams with their convex gleamsA
Build up the blue dome of airK2
I silently laugh at my own cenotaphM2
And out of the caverns of rainG
Like a child from the womb like a ghost from the tombO2
I arise and unbuild it againP2
