Stanzas. -- April, 1814 Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAC DEDE FGHI JKJK LMLM NNNN

Away the moor is dark beneath the moonA
Rapid clouds have drank the last pale beam of evenB
Away the gathering winds will call the darkness soonA
And profoundest midnight shroud the serene lights of heavenC
-
Pause not The time is past Every voice cries AwayD
Tempt not with one last tear thy friend s ungentle moodE
Thy lover s eye so glazed and cold dares not entreat thy stayD
Duty and dereliction guide thee back to solitudeE
-
Away away to thy sad and silent homeF
Pour bitter tears on its desolated hearthG
Watch the dim shades as like ghosts they go and comeH
And complicate strange webs of melancholy mirthI
-
The leaves of wasted autumn woods shall float around thine headJ
The blooms of dewy spring shall gleam beneath thy feetK
But thy soul or this world must fade in the frost that binds the deadJ
Ere midnight s frown and morning s smile ere thou and peace may meetK
-
The cloud shadows of midnight possess their own reposeL
For the weary winds are silent or the moon is in the deepM
Some respite to its turbulence unresting ocean knowsL
Whatever moves or toils or grieves hath its appointed sleepM
-
Thou in the grave shalt rest yet till the phantoms fleeN
Which that house and heath and garden made dear to thee erewhileN
Thy remembrance and repentance and deep musings are not freeN
From the music of two voices and the light of one sweet smileN
