'Ah quit me not yet for the wind whistles shrillA
Its blast wanders mournfully over the hillA
The thunder s wild voice rattles madly aboveB
You will not then cannot then leave me my love 'C
-
I must dearest Agnes the night is far goneD
I must wander this evening to Strasburg aloneE
I must seek the drear tomb of my ancestors bonesF
And must dig their remains from beneath the cold stonesF
-
'For the spirit of Conrad there meets me this nightG
And we quit not the tomb 'till dawn of the lightG
And Conrad's been dead just a month and a dayH
So farewell dearest Agnes for I must awayH
-
'He bid me bring with me what most I held dearI
Or a month from that time should I lie on my bierJ
And I'd sooner resign this false fluttering breathK
Than my Agnes should dread either danger or deathK
-
'And I love you to madness my Agnes I loveB
My constant affection this night will I proveL
This night will I go to the sepulchre's jawM
Alone will I glut its all conquering maw'N
-
'No no loved Adolphus thy Agnes will shareO
In the tomb all the dangers that wait for you thereO
I fear not the spirit I fear not the graveP
My dearest Adolphus I d perish to save'P
-
'Nay seek not to say that thy love shall not goQ
But spare me those ages of horror and woeQ
For I swear to thee here that I'll perish ere dayH
If you go unattended by Agnes away'Q
-
The night it was bleak the fierce storm raged aroundR
The lightning's blue fire light flashed on the groundR
Strange forms seemed to flit and howl tidings of fateS
As Agnes advanced to the sepulchre gateS
-
The youth struck the portal the echoing soundR
Was fearfully rolled midst the tombstones aroundR
The blue lightning gleamed o er the dark chapel spireT
And tinged were the storm clouds with sulphurous fireU
-
Still they gazed on the tombstone where Conrad reclinedV
Yet they shrank at the cold chilling blast of the windV
When a strange silver brilliance pervaded the sceneW
And a figure advanced tall in form fierce in mienW
-
A mantle encircled his shadowy formN
As light as a gossamer borne on the stormN
Celestial terror sat throned in his gazeX
Like the midnight pestiferous meteor s blazeX
-
SPIRITY
Thy father Adolphus was false false as hellZ
And Conrad has cause to remember it wellZ
He ruined my Mother despised me his sonA2
I quitted the world ere my vengeance was doneA2
-
I was nearly expiring 'twas close of the dayH
A demon advanced to the bed where I layH
He gave me the power from whence I was hurledB2
To return to revenge to return to the worldB2
-
Now Adolphus I'll seize thy best loved in my armsC2
I'll drag her to Hades all blooming in charmsC2
On the black whirlwind s thundering pinion I'll rideD2
And fierce yelling fiends shall exult o'er thy brideD2
-
He spoke and extending his ghastly arms wideD2
Majestic advanced with a swift noiseless strideD2
He clasped the fair Agnes he raised her on highP
And cleaving the roof sped his way to the skyP
-
All was now silent and over the tombN
Thicker deeper was swiftly extended a gloomN
Adolphus in horror sank down on the stoneE
And his fleeting soul fled with a harrowing groanE
-
