quot Throughout these infinite orbs of mingling lightA
Of which yon earth is one is wide diffus'dB
A Spirit of activity and lifeC
That knows no term cessation or decayD
That fades not when the lamp of earthly lifeC
Extinguish'd in the dampness of the graveE
Awhile there slumbers more than when the babeF
In the dim newness of its being feelsG
The impulses of sublunary thingsH
And all is wonder to unpractis'd senseI
But active steadfast and eternal stillJ
Guides the fierce whirlwind in the tempest roarsK
Cheers in the day breathes in the balmy grovesL
Strengthens in health and poisons in diseaseM
And in the storm of change that ceaselesslyN
Rolls round the eternal universe and shakesO
Its undecaying battlement presidesP
Apportioning with irresistible lawQ
The place each spring of its machine shall fillJ
So that when waves on waves tumultuous heapR
Confusion to the clouds and fiercely drivenS
Heaven's lightnings scorch the uprooted ocean fordsT
Whilst to the eye of shipwreck'd marinerU
Lone sitting on the bare and shuddering rockV
All seems unlink'd contingency and chanceW
No atom of this turbulence fulfilsW
A vague and unnecessitated taskX
Or acts but as it must and ought to actY
Even the minutest molecule of lightA
That in an April sunbeam's fleeting glowZ
Fulfils its destin'd though invisible workA2
The universal Spirit guides nor lessW
When merciless ambition or mad zealB2
Has led two hosts of dupes to battlefieldC2
That blind they there may dig each other's gravesW
And call the sad work glory does it ruleD2
All passions not a thought a will an actY
No working of the tyrant's moody mindE2
Nor one misgiving of the slaves who boastF2
Their servitude to hide the shame they feelB2
Nor the events enchaining every willJ
That from the depths of unrecorded timeG2
Have drawn all influencing virtue passW
Unrecogniz'd or unforeseen by theeN
Soul of the Universe eternal springH2
Of life and death of happiness and woeZ
Of all that chequers the phantasmal sceneI2
That floats before our eyes in wavering lightA
Which gleams but on the darkness of our prisonS
Whose chains and massy wallsW
We feel but cannot seeN

quot Spirit of Nature all sufficing PowerU
Necessity thou mother of the worldJ2
Unlike the God of human error thouK2
Requir'st no prayers or praises the capriceW
Of man's weak will belongs no more to theeN
Than do the changeful passions of his breastL2
To thy unvarying harmony the slaveE
Whose horrible lusts spread misery o'er the worldJ2
And the good man who lifts with virtuous prideM2
His being in the sight of happinessW
That springs from his own works the poison treeN
Beneath whose shade all life is wither'd upN2
And the fair oak whose leafy dome affordsW
A temple where the vows of happy loveO2
Are register'd are equal in thy sightA
No love no hate thou cherishest revengeP2
And favouritism and worst desire of fameQ2
Thou know'st not all that the wide world containsW
Are but thy passive instruments and thouK2
Regard'st them all with an impartial eyeR2
Whose joy or pain thy nature cannot feelB2
Because thou hast not human senseW
Because thou art not human mindE2

quot Yes when the sweeping storm of timeG2
Has sung its death dirge o'er the ruin'd fanesW
And broken altars of the almighty FiendS2
Whose name usurps thy honours and the bloodT2
Through centuries clotted there has floated downU2
The tainted flood of ages shalt thou liveV2
Unchangeable A shrine is rais'd to theeN
Which nor the tempest breath of timeG2
Nor the interminable floodT2
Over earth's slight pageant rollingH2
Availeth to destroyW2
The sensitive extension of the worldJ2
That wondrous and eternal faneX2
Where pain and pleasure good and evil joinY2
To do the will of strong necessityN
And life in multitudinous shapesW
Still pressing forward where no term can beN
Like hungry and unresting flameQ2
Curls round the eternal columns of its strength quotN
