O universal Mother who dost keepA
From everlasting thy foundations deepA
Eldest of things Great Earth I sing of theeB
All shapes that have their dwelling in the seaB
All things that fly or on the ground divineC
Live move and there are nourished these are thineC
These from thy wealth thou dost sustain from theeB
Fair babes are born and fruits on every treeB
Hang ripe and large revered DivinityB
-
The life of mortal men beneath thy swayD
Is held thy power both gives and takes awayD
Happy are they whom thy mild favours nourishE
All things unstinted round them grow and flourishE
For them endures the life sustaining fieldF
Its load of harvest and their cattle yieldF
Large increase and their house with wealth is filledG
Such honoured dwell in cities fair and freeB
The homes of lovely women prosperouslyH
Their sons exult in youth s new budding gladnessB
And their fresh daughters free from care or sadnessB
With bloom inwoven dance and happy songI
On the soft flowers the meadow grass amongJ
Leap round them sporting such delights by theeB
Are given rich Power revered DivinityB
-
Mother of gods thou Wife of starry HeavenK
Farewell be thou propitious and be givenK
A happy life for this brief melodyB
Nor thou nor other songs shall unremembered beB
